WASHINGTON, DC D.C. National Lawyers Guild Student Committee Calls for Action in Response to the Lynne Stewart Verdict – February 17th, 12pm at the D.C. Federal Court House. In solidarity with the February 17th National Day of Outrage announced by the National Lawyers Guild, the D.C. NLG Student Committee is calling for an action in front of the D.C. Federal Courthouse, 333 Constitution Ave., N.W., on Thursday, February 17th from 12pm until 2pm. The theme, as each speaker comes to the mike, is "Today I am Lynne Stewart, and my name is _______ and I serve the people as _______." We are arranging representation from defenders, educators, defendants, public defenders, government, and activists. The event will highlight Lynne's case and the threat the verdict and the government's larger political strategy poses to attorneys and clients alike. SAN FRANCISCO Tabling at Golden Gate University We will be "tabling" again this Thursday, February 17, all day, to raise awareness about the Lynne Stewart case. The National Lawyers Guild has called for a National Day of Outrage because of the recent guilty verdict in the case. The tabling schedule is at the bottom of this email. LOS ANGELES In L.A. we are focusing on our six law school chapters. Each chapter will observe the day by: 1) the students wearing an arm band explaining their silence on the 17th; 2) they will pass out flyers about the case and the threats to the Sixth Amendment post 9/11; 3) tabling at the lunch hour on campus 4) use of the Chapter's weekly radio show to host Lynne Stewart and others to discuss the case 5) a larger press conference with local bar leaders and law professors is set for a later date 6) speeches to other groups about the case 7) we also got various peace and social justice groups to issue e-mails alerts and to schedule events around the 17th and beyond 8) all chapter members were sent the law student flyer and announcement of other events BELLINGHAM, WASHINGTON The Bellingham Chapter of The National Lawyers Guild-in keeping with a call from the Guild for a National Day of Outrage in support of Lynne Stewart will be holding a rally and press conference at the Federal Building at Cornwall and Magnolia at 12:00 noon on Thursday, February 17th. PORTLAND, OREGON LEWIS & CLARK LAW STUDENTS PROTEST THE CONVICTION OF LYNNE STEWART WHEN: Thursday, February 17, 2005; 8:30 a.m. WHAT: Rally/ Press Conference; As part of a National Day of Outrage in Support of Lynne Stewart, the Lewis & Clark Law School chapter of the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) will be holding a protest rally and press conference. At the rally, students will be wearing arm bands and holding signs that say "zealous advocate." A student will speak on behalf of the students gathered explaining our reasons for the event. After the rally, students will go to classes with signs that say "another advocate silenced" and give a letter to their professors saying they are protesting the conviction of Lynne Stewart by remaining silent in their classes. WHERE: Lewis & Clark Law School BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA The Birmingham Peace Project met last night and also endorsed tomorrow's planned demo outside the Federal Courthouse (see website Birmingham Peace Project for directions and links) in solidarity with the National Day of Outrage called by the National Lawyers Guild in response to the Lynne Stewart conviction. We will plan to be there from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., just before the Scrushy trial breaks for lunch and for a while after. Signs identifying participating groups are appropriate. BALTIMORE, MARYLAND University of Baltimore students flyered, sent emails and articles to the student body, and are tabling in the law school lobby with information. We will also be organizing a larger event/fundraiser in March with MD Guild. |
